Stop wishing the IWGP Heavyweight Title on these people. It’s a curse that will take away everything that makes them so great and wonderful. Ishii and Suzuki, two of the most consistently great wrestlers in NJPW’s most beloved run come out to put another predictably fantastic match. Their perennial spot on the midcard no longer seems a curse to me but rather a blessing. They’re the breath of fresh air on these bloated cards. They give us exactly what we want out of their match, rarely anything more or anything less.
Here, they start off aggressive and gritty from the go. Suzuki has been having a hell of a year and G1 time is Ishii time so there was nothing here to complicate things. Just two veterans smashing into each other with disgustingly violent strikes. Ishii really brought the intensity behind his strikes here more than usual likely because Suzuki wasn’t pulling anything on his end either.
In between your standard elbow strikes we also got some pretty disgusting headbutts to add just a little more spice onto an already meaty match. Just two dudes beating the shit out of each other. What more do you want out of a G1 match?
